What traders need to know about September

On both the US stock market and the German stock market, September is by far the weakest stock market month ever.

On a long-term average, September is the weakest month in many indices. Investors and traders should be more cautious in the ninth month of the year, as a seasonal comparison of the performance of the major stock market indices shows.

This also applies to the DAX. Since 1959, for example, the German leading index and the predecessor indices have lost an average of 1.74% in September, as a long-term evaluation of the performance data shows. No other month performed so negatively in the long-term average.

In the U.S. stock market, the Dow Jones Industrial Average lost an average of 1.13% in September since 1896. The only other month with a negative average monthly performance is May.
